Q1 : How did you get your alias/rap name?
I started out as a DJ. I got my first show and needed a name real quick. I decided to go with the initials of my real name.
Q2 : What year did you first get into hip hop?
I first got into hip hop in 1987. I use to play a lot of basketball. The older players on my team would go on basketball trips to the States. They would bring back rap mixtapes and pass them around.
Q3 : Who have been the major influences on your career to date and how? (musical or other)
Slick Rick, Volume 10, Saafir, KRS One. Those people had a huge influence on my style. Shazzam and Pip Skid encouraged me to record songs. Soso and DJ Chaps supported me a lot.
Q4 : If you could perform or record with anyone dead or alive - who would it be and why?
I would record with Slick Rick. I think we could make some fun songs and tell some interesting stories.
Q5 : What countries and cities have you most enjoyed performing in? Any interesting stories to tell?
My favorite cities performing in are Saskatoon, Canada, Minneapolis and Wurzburg, Germany. I like going to Santa Barbara/Goleda to spend a beautiful day along the ocean, then rapping at night. last time in Santa Barbara we saw mike tyson walking around. A lot of movie stars live there. When I went to Moscow everyone was convinced that I would come back without a kidney. People were horrified that I only knew the promoter there through the internet. I said fuck it, i'm gonna let my nuts hang like Willie D from the Geto Boys once said. The Moscow airport is the weirdest place on earth. The customs officers let me walk through. I picked out my contacts in a crowd of 500 Russians. Rap people look the same everywhere pretty much. When I saw them my heart stopped racing because I knew I was in good hands.
Q6 : Across your career to date, what highlights will you hold onto till you die?
Stuff that means the world to me. 2mex inviting me out to L.A. to do a show. The first time I heard soso's album, tenth street and clarence. People still knowing the words to "Thought Process" after 8 years. Having the homies from Wurzburg picking us up blasting John Smith, my Canadian rapper homie.
Q7 : Vinyl and analog have played such a massive part of the development of hip hop, how do you feel about the shift to digital?
I will resist digital to the end, buy vinyl.
Q8 : What advice do you have for young, aspiring artists (MCs/DJs/Producers)?
Learn to give back to hip hop. You will respect it more in the long run. Learn when to say no to your friends. Try and be better at detecting the feelings of people. Listen to Ill All Skratch. Don't forget Special Ed.
Q9 : What one thing in your career you would most want to be remembered for?
My song "Midnight Run".
Q10 : What other activities do you enjoy doing when you're not making music, rehearsing or performing?
Watching hockey, following politics, working on stretches to heal my back pain, going to Superstore, complaining about teenagers.
Q11 : Why hip hop?
Growing up poor it spoke to me and gave me perspective on how things really worked.
